Swedish Royal Court. 50th Jubilee emblem for His Majesty, Carl XVI Gustaf.

During the spring of 2022 the Royal Court announced a competition for the design of a symbol for the King’s 50th Jubilee aimed at graphic design students. The winner, Elis Nyström from KTH presented a bold and modern design. He was appointed a collaboration with the The Studio and jury representative Tom Hedqvist to further develop the design of the emblem, typographic handling for use over a wide number of activities and celebrations during the 2023 Jubilee year.

The emblem’s crown is gold with gemstones in dynamic colours representing the King’s focus areas. The geometric shapes burst into confetti celebrating the anniversary year. The crown is paired with the typeface Funkis C, designed by Swedish typographers, Göran Söderström and Fredrik Gruber. The characters are inspired by the letters that Sigurd Lewerentz made for his poster for The Stockholm Exhibition in 1930 which nod to Swedish typography heritage while reflecting the geometry of the crown.
